A partir de les instruccions codificades en l\u2019ADN, sintetitzen prote\u00efnes que han de ser transportades des del lloc on han estat produ\u00efdes fins al lloc en el qual faran la seva funci\u00f3, en un altre compartiment cel\u00b7lular o a l\u2019exterior de la c\u00e8l\u00b7lula. Enguany, el premi Nobel de Fisiologia o Medicina ha estat atorgat a James E. Rothman (de la Universitat de Yale), Randy W. Schekman (de la Universitat de Calif\u00f2rnia, a Berkeley) i Thomas C. S\u00fcdhof (de la Universitat d\u2019Stanford) per la seva recerca sobre la maquin\u00e0ria cel\u00b7lular que regula el transport de ves\u00edcules, un dels principals sistemes de transport que utilitzen les nostres c\u00e8l\u00b7lules. Una mena de correu postal, en el qual els paquets s\u00f3n aquestes petites estructures (les ves\u00edcules) envoltades d\u2019una membrana de l\u00edpids, que es fusiona amb la membrana del compartiment en el qual han de lliurar la seva c\u00e0rrega molecular.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Schekman va descobrir un conjunt de gens necessaris per a aquest transport. Rothman va descriure la maquin\u00e0ria proteica que permet que les ves\u00edcules es fusionin amb les seves dianes per tal que se\u2019n transfereixi la c\u00e0rrega. I S\u00fcdhof va revelar com determinats senyals instrueixen les ves\u00edcules per alliberar la seva c\u00e0rrega amb precisi\u00f3.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">A finals dels setanta, quan Schekman i Rothman van comen\u00e7ar la seva recerca, la ci\u00e8ncia havia identificat el paper de les ves\u00edcules en el transport cel\u00b7lular, per\u00f2 no se\u2019n coneixien els mecanismes implicats en la seva formaci\u00f3, com aquestes reconeixien la destinaci\u00f3 i com es produ\u00efa la fusi\u00f3 amb la membrana de dest\u00ed. En el laboratori del primer, gr\u00e0cies a les eines de la gen\u00e8tica, van poder caracteritzar una s\u00e8rie de mutants del llevat amb defectes en el transport cel\u00b7lular que els van permetre identificar una vintena de gens responsables d\u2019aquest proc\u00e9s. En el del segon, amb les de la bioqu\u00edmica, van poder purificar diverses de les prote\u00efnes implicades en la fusi\u00f3 vesicular. S\u00fcdhof, per la seva banda, va demostrar com la fusi\u00f3 de les ves\u00edcules que contenen neurotransmissors amb la membrana sin\u00e0ptica es produeix gr\u00e0cies a un senyal de calci.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Un cop m\u00e9s el Nobel d\u2019enguany posa de manifest la import\u00e0ncia de la recerca b\u00e0sica en la biomedicina.
